Description

Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is a kind of biopsy procedure for the examination of any abnormal-appearing tissue or lump in the body. This diagnostic procedure uses a thin (23-25 gauge) needle to insert it into the body and extract a small amount of tissue as a sample for further examination. FNAC is among the safe, non-invasive, quicker and less traumatic procedure where the complications are infrequent. It is performed on the swellings and lumps under the skin. During the procedure, the area or the skin of the lump is sterilized and may be numbed with local anesthesia whereas superficial lumps may not require it. After locating it, a fine needle is passed into the lump/mass. It may be inserted and pulled out several times as per the kind of mass or lump. After needle inserted into the mass, tissues are withdrawn and are sent for the observation and examination. Patient’s vital signs are checked and sent for observation if required.
