Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) refers to positive pressure ventilation support provided through a non-invasive interface (nasal mask, facemask, or nose plug) rather than an invasive interface (endotracheal tube, tracheostomy). It implies providing respiratory support through a sealed mask without the need for intubation. NIV reduces the use of resources compared to invasive ventilation, thereby avoiding its associated complications and improving patient comfort. It has become an important mechanism of the respiratory support system both inside and outside the ICU by providing assisted breaths and mechanically replacing artificial airways.
NIV can be further classified as non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV) and negative pressure ventilation (NPV). The former includes continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and Bi-level positive airway pressure(BIPAP).
